Garage Sale Goodies!:

Get off your butt and go look! There's all kinds of deals to be had.

Recently, my wife and I set out to visit a few garage sales. I didn't really expect to have much luck because, it seems like all the sales lately have been filled with kids stuff and clothes. Well, this Saturday was different! It was definitely a "guy" day. We came home with the back of my truck filled with good deals. I am showing just "some" of the days booty. Also, I'm starting off in the order of size of "gloatability." As we go down the page, those knowledgeable in tools will be astounded at what can be had just for being in the right place at the right time.

Stanley Block Plane
There is nothing special about this plane, you can pick it up in any well stocked hardware store. Well, if you have about 25 dollars. It appears this plane had been used, maybe once. The blade is still factory sharp! My cost: three bucks!
Brand New Dayton 1HP Motor
A couple of years ago, I picked up a lathe without a motor. I've been looking for one, since. This ought to fill the bill, and make my Son-in-Law, Kelvin, happy. I gave him the lathe and now we have a motor for it. This motor would sell for at least 100 dollars. The guy had it marked 20.00. I gave him 10 bucks and got out of there...
Air Operated Woodworking Vice
It may not be the "best deal" of the day, but it is probably the coolest! This guy was very inventive. He took a really good quality woodworking vise, made by the Chas Parker Company of Meriden Connecticut, removed the handle and mounted an air cylinder and Airo control to it and created a really quick acting vise. Click the picture to see it in action. It takes about thirty seconds for the MPG movie to load up, but it's worth it! Oh yeah, ten bucks!!
What's That?
You Don't Know What It Is?

The next picture will give you a better idea. It's a Delta Tenonning Jig, model 34-172. Yeah, it needs a lot of cleaning up, but as rusty and dirty as it is, all the adjustments work easily. There is a strange story to go with this purchase. I have always wanted one of these, but couldn't justify the price (Woodworkers Supply lists this for 299.95). I have envisioned walking into a garage sale, looking around and finding one of these. I thought I would take it to the lady selling her deceased husbands tools, ask the price and she would say, 20.00. Well, that's pretty much the way this went, except it was the son selling the tools, he said "ya' know, you'll need a lathe to use that thing", and then said, (are you sitting down?) five bucks! I could barely get the money out of my pocket, my hands were trembling so bad. I paid him and immediately took it out to my truck before returning to continue looking around. I didn't want someone to come up and tell him it's real use, or value.
This Probably Looks a Little More Familiar
It consists of a cast iron body, wood handle, and steel plate and miter bar. I can't wait to get it cleaned up and use it. I don't often restore old tools, but this one begs for it. I hope I can get some Delta Gray spray paint. I will post a picture of it, once it is done. Oh, yeah, did I mention it was FIVE DOLLARS!!!
